Writing Tips: Part 2

3. PRESENTATION

Presentation of the answer script is one of the key aspects of Board Exams. You must have been repeatedly reminded by your teachers to underline the important words or lines with a black pen, improve your handwriting and what not. Yes, these things are indispensable when you attempt the paper. It is important to note the fact that the examiners usually tend to be in a hurry while checking the answer scripts since they too get limited time to check, and to achieve that, they got to rush.

Following are a few important points related to the same:

  • Mention the question number correctly and explicitly. The examiner may not hunt for answers corresponding to the questions if you have numbered the question number wrongly, and instead may just mark you zero for that question. (there is no point losing marks for such trivial mistakes, and yes, such things have happened in the past)

  • It is significant to maintain speed as well as a legible handwriting while writing the answers. This will be discussed in the coming main points.

  • Leave sufficient (neither too less, nor too much of) space between alphabets, between words, and after every answer (say 2-3 lines). How much space to leave, is pretty subjective and should just be enough to make your paper look neat and readable.

  • Highlighting important points/wordsWell, a sad fact known to everyone is that when the examiner is in a hurry, s/he tends to read only the underlined portions of the answers and mark accordingly (just like many of you would be doing while reading this article). So, highlighting is significant for subjective papers (and subjective questions in any paper) like English, Business Studies, Psychology, Political Science etc.

Kindly Note – Highlighting refers to underlining the answers and not using a highlighter (which is not recommended). Further, underlining technique can also vary from student-to-student (as discussed in the below mentioned sub-subpoints b and c)

a)   Be selective/choosy to an extent: Do not underline lines, but just the important keywords and/or phrases, expressions.

b)   You may underline simultaneously (but quickly) (saved time for me since I had practised this during the last 2-3 months while attempting mocks) or devote some time at the end of the paperCaution: If you do not have enough practice, kindly do not underline simultaneously, since you may end up leaving the paper incomplete.

c)   You may use the same ink used to attempt the paper (blue), or a black (other coloured pens like red or pink are not recommended) ink (black ink – preferred, but not recommended at the cost of leaving the paper incomplete or unrevised since changing inks takes few seconds every time)

d)   In practical subjects and/or questions like Mathematics or Physics, it is always good to Box the Final Numerical Answer (correct steps with a wrong or incomprehensible answer shall lead to loss of marks)

Only if time permits, lines can be drawn at the end of every section/answer once you are done with the paper and revision.
