Sleep, Diet and Recreation

The days counting up to the board exams can be stressful. Here's how you can manage your studies effectively in this period.

Just like a sportsperson during a match, your performance needs to peak at the right time. This comes with a well-rested, focussed mind and a healthy body.


SLEEP


Objective: To be fresh and well-rested in order to perform well in the board exams.

Do’s:


  • Adjust your sleep pattern according to the timing of your board exam, not only for the day of the exam but for the entire month and half.

  • Get as much sleep as you need (even 7-8 hours if you need it).

  • For sometime before you go to bed, stop studying. You need to take your mind off formulae, theories and whatnot to get a good night’s sleep!

Don’ts:


  • Don’t compromise on your sleep, to study a little more. Sleep deprivation will only make you less focussed and less productive.

  • Don’t study till late night if that requires you need to sleep in the afternoon or till late in the morning. Remember, your exams will be held from 10:30 to 1:30 (for CBSE) and 2:00 to 5:00 (for ISC).

  • Don’t change your sleep pattern frequently

DIET


Objective: Stay healthy till your board and entrance exams are over.

Method:

  • Maintain a balance diet

  • Don’t take risks here


RECREATION (taking breaks)


This is a very important aspect.


Objective: To be fresh and keep your mind active and at optimal performance.

Obviously you cannot study for all the hours you are awake. After studying for a while you need to take a break, and then get back to studies. These breaks are not a waste of time, but will instead help you to study better when used appropriately by ensuring that you don’t become saturated or exhausted.

How long should the break be?


There is no fixed answer to this question: it depends in your concentration capacity. The basic idea is to have studies and breaks in an alternative fashion. You can use 30 minutes study with 5-minute breaks or even 4 hours study with a 45-minute break. See what works for you.

Keep in mind:


What you choose to do during your break should be relaxing and rejuvenating but not distracting in the sense that when you sit back to study, your mind should not still be thinking about the leisure activity you did during the break.

Suggestive ideas of what you can do for a break:


Listen to music, go for walks, talk to family members, play an instrument, read novels, draw/sing/dance, meditation, relaxation, play a game, etc.Basically whatever works for you, provided it is a change from studying.
