CBSE Physics: A commentary on material

  • Primary book is NCERT

  1. Be thorough with everything given in this.

  2. Unfortunately it does not contain all that you need to ace the board exams. (See SL Arora)

  3. Solve all example questions. They have been asked in the past.

  4. Regarding the exercises at the end of each chapter: except additional question, the rest are very important.

  5. For a student aiming to score above 95, s/he must go through the additional questions as well.

  • SL Arora is very helpful

  1. For several topics/chapters, NCERT is difficult to read and understand. Here referring to SL Arora is better. You can first understand the concepts by reading SL Arora. Then you can go back to NCERT and give it a read. Now you will be able to better understand what is given there.

  2. There are a few topics that are not covered in the NCERT but are tested upon in the board exam. Technically they are within syllabus and may be seen as extensions/ applications of what NCERT contains, but we may need to go through them explicitly. So read the extra topics given in SL Arora. (For example: Identifying null points for a system of a bar magnet and the Earth’s magnetic field. It appears as a exercise question in NCERT but is explained properly in SL Arora)

Derivations are in general simpler to understand when seen in SL Arora in comparison to NCERT. Personally, for a few chapters such as Ray Optics, Wave optics, I used all the derivations from SL Arora. This book also has a vast question bank which is quite useful.

  • Past year board papers

  1. This is one of the most important resources.

  2. There are a few questions that cannot be directly answered (at least I couldn’t) by understanding the textbook, solving all its sums and solving the sums in Xam Idea. Such questions may be found in past year board papers

Personal Experience: In my physics board paper (2017), there was a 2 marks question which I definitely wouldn’t have known the answer to had I not seen past year board papers. Several of my friends lost those 2 marks as they had not checked out papers as far as 7 years in the past.

  • XAM IDEA

  1. Definitely recommended to go through this book

  2. Can skip the theory sections, if you don’t have the time

  3. Definitely go through all the questions given here.

  4. It also contains past year board questions, chapter wise

  5. Caution: Don’t use the answers given here as model answers and some of them may be wrong as well.

  • Arihant

  1. They have a book on past year board papers.

  2. They also have good question banks (in the form of books), can refer to those.

  3. They also have chapter wise summary and flowcharts in on of their books

  • Pradeep’s Publication

Several students use this book, however be careful as it contains loads of extra, unrequired information.

  • HC Verma

  1. Not recommended for board preparation.

  2. This book has brilliant conceptual explanations and is a very interesting read

  3. However, the approach to derivations and definitions is very different to that adopted by CBSE and thus should be avoided to be on the safe side

  • Resnick halliday

Definitely NOT RECOMMENDED for the CBSE class 12 exam. Might be useful for IIT preparation.

Hope this helped! Stay tuned for more!
