CBSE English Elective C (101): Note making and Summarising

Note making:

  1. As you read the passage, make a mental/written note of main points and sub points you will be using. You avoid missing them or running out of points at a later stage in this manner.

  2. Form three to five main points

  3. Points that can cover one or more paragraphs should be transformed into main points. These will also be points whose omission will make the notes incomplete.

  4. Each point should be short and need not form a complete sentenceOmit articles and unnecessary words in order to do so.

  5. Examples and figures should preferably not be included as sub points.

  6. Include at least one sub-sub point.

  7. Use four to five abbreviations that are easily understood. Do so by using common abbreviations (such as TV) or omitting vowels and certain letters (such as using invst for investment). This carries 1 mark.

  8. Make a key for abbreviations in the form of a table at the end of the notes.

  9. Maintain a constant, hierarchical indentation, i.e., the sub points should be indented more than the main points and the sub-sub points even more. This carries marks.

  10. Underline the heading and main points.

  11. Do not use abbreviations in the heading.

Summary writing:

  1. The quickest way to write a summary is to include all your main points and relevant sub points. This ensures you don’t miss out on any points and makes correction easier for the examiner.

  2. Do not include your own opinions.

  3. Do not exceed the word limit.

Hope this helped! Stay tuned for more!
