CBSE Political Science- Writing Tips

Hey everyone!

In this third article concerning class 12 political science board examination, I’m going to give tips on writing strategies and how to answer cartoon based or map based questions.

1- Foremost, you must realise that it’s a 100 marks purely theoretical paper. You are required to write a lot. Try to maintain a good speed from the very beginning so that you don’t face a time crunch at the end. Additionally, keep a check on the length of your answers. The word limits given in the instructions are simply a guideline, and you can safely write more than that. I personally used to write 3-4 sentences for 1-markers; a little less than about half a page for 2-markers; 1-1.5 pages for 4-markers; about 1.25- 1.5 pages for 5- markers; and almost 1.75- 2 pages for 6-markers. Please note that I have a relatively small and compact handwriting.

2- You must write all the answers in points. All the points must have a subheading or a head point. This is critical. Let’s say, you are answering a question about UN’s role in peace building. You could make the following head points- a) Backdrop; b) Peace- one of the key pillars of UN; c) Successful operations till date; d) Examples of failures (you could write about, say, how U.N. wasn’t able to deter US from invading Iraq); e) Current engagements (This could be the point where you display your general awareness. You could write about how U.N. has condemned the Syrian Civil War, supported the Palestinian cause etc.); and so forth.

3- Please feel free to support your answers with flowcharts or diagrams, wherever possible. This makes your answer more aesthetically appealing (which is important for CBSE). It’s easy to make flowcharts for US hegemony, regional aspirations, etc.

4- Cartoon based questions are remarkably easy and scoring. Generally, they break up the 5-Marks into 3 sub-questions. Only one or two of these is directly related to the cartoon; the other(s) is/are asked from the text. Basically, you need to know the descriptions that are given beside the cartoons in the textbook; and obviously you need to get your text right. Don’t forget to study all the cartoons carefully. You must be able to identify different personalities, party symbols etc. CBSE regularly asks questions of this sort.

5- Similarly, passage based questions are easy and scoring at the same time. You should try answering the passage based questions given at the end of every chapter. Even though, CBSE generally picks a passage from within the text itself. Some questions would be directly related to the passage. DO NOT copy everything given in the passage. You must add your own interpretation to what the text says. Other questions would be related to the passage but not directly from there. Thus, you need to be thorough with your basic text first.

6- Map based questions are angels in disguise. Basically, you just need to know about the locations of the 29 Indian states, and all the countries in the world that find a mention in the text. So, just remember the locations of countries in Asia, Americas, and a few prominent ones from Europe and Africa. But there’s a catch. CBSE won’t ask you to mark Brazil; it would rather ask you to mark the country where Rio Summit was held. Thus, you must know about the location of every place that you read about. Last year, we were asked to mark the country where Montreal Protocol was signed. Many students didn’t know where Montreal is!

I’ll close this article by wishing you people all the best for your upcoming exams. Hope that all of you do great!
