ISC English Paper 1: PART 2

This article continues from English Paper 1-Grammar:PART 1 and explores the questions on Functional Grammar and Comprehension.

Q3. Functional Grammar (20 marks)

Functional grammar is the most scoring part of the paper, but usually most mistakes are made in this section. While Transformation of Sentences is scoring enough, Prepositions and Tenses need a lot of practice. There’s only one way through functional grammar-practice, practice, practice.

Keep an hour or two every weekend for grammar practice. Doing this on a regular basis will give you a grip on the kind of questions that are asked. Here are some books you can refer to for functional grammar: Total English by Xavier Pinto (Morning Star Publications). Do purchase the Teacher’s Handbook for Total English to crosscheck your answers. Another practice book is a book by John Mason. This book has slightly tougher questions and should not be the first choice for practice.

Q4. Comprehension (25 marks)

The comprehension question requires you to find words with similar meanings, frame sentences, answer questions based on the passage and summarise. For the question-answer section of the question, do not beat around the bush and write precise and concise answers to the given questions. Do not lengthen an answer unnecessarily.

For the summarisation, make sure that your passage is exactly 100 words, no more and no less. When you write down your ideas in points, make sure that you number them and do not use bullet points or arrows. Make a grid to help you summarise the required part of the passage. Include all relevant points while maintaining proper sentence structure.

Then, make sure to write your passage in the paragraph form below.

A section of the Pupil Analysis:

The grammar paper is easy to score in. Just practice regularly and go through the past papers to gauge the kind and level of questions. Do not take this very scoring subject for granted.
